Position Overview:
The position of Publisher, Lonely Planet Kids is primarily responsible for the development, creation and delivery of a market-leading children’s list focused on showing kids what an amazing place the world is.
The role will deliver high quality and profitable books, ebooks and content that cement Lonely Planet’s reputation as a children’s publisher. It is responsible for delivering these products to budget, timelines, editorial standards and commercial targets.


The Publisher, Lonely Planet Kids has a global remit, working closely with the MD – Publishing and the LP Kids team in London and New York to generate a constant flow of high quality ideas that work for home and coedition markets, as well as supplying Sales & Marketing teams with high quality materials to maximise sales.


Key Result Areas:


Product and Content

  • Creation, development and execution of market-leading trade titles for children, as well as effective sales materials
  • Work with MD – Publishing to ensure a constant pipeline of exceptional trade ideas that are part of an ongoing publishing programme, growing the value of the children’s list
  • Work with industry leaders and develop an extensive network of authors, publishers and agents to ensure LP is attracting and publishing the best children’s titles possible
  • Book production milestones, particularly to-printer deadlines
  • Cost control and productivity during the production phase
  • Title/list performance to plan/budget
  • Apply Lonely Planet’s Editorial Principles to all content and products
  • Maximize cross-media opportunities and campaign opportunities


Publishing Planning

  • Engage sales, marketing and coedition teams in transparent, effective list development
  • Expand the list into new age ranges and sub-genres in a sustainable, profitable way
  • Provide input and feedback on product strategy, content strategy and publishing plans for the wider Trade & Reference list
  • Work with coedition, online, mobile, social media and Sales & Marketing teams to develop effective plans that maximise opportunities across all these channels
  • Prepare book P&Ls for approval, recommend print quantities, and accurate budgets


Print Product Delivery

  • Accountable for delivery of print products to time and budget (from concept to market)
  • Responsible for the quality of the print products (both content, editorial and production)
  • Working with the Production Editor, identify and resolve resourcing and scheduling issues, to enable successful product delivery at a title level


Team Leadership

  • Actively build and maintain morale levels through open communication and activities that foster a sense of team unity
  • Comply with appropriate Industrial Relations legislation in relation to staff management


Teamwork & Communication

  • Work as part of the Lonely Planet community to create a positive, tolerant and harmonious work environment

Key Skills / Experience / Knowledge / Qualifications / Attributes:


  • 5 years+ children’s publishing experience
  • Knowledge of publishing and printing industry processes & technologies
  • Knowledge of international & coedition book markets
  • Tertiary qualifications or equivalent relevant extensive publishing experience.
  • Exceptional editorial / creative skills
  • Highly creative and flexible approach to projects, with sound commercial knowledge, a strong feel for what works, strong entrepreneurial skills and plenty of initiative.
  • Ability to analyse and interpret market trends and other external perspectives in order to identify new content and product opportunities.
  • Ability to manage a number of projects simultaneously, on schedule, within budget.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation and problem solving skills.
  • Deadline oriented, with a demonstrated ability to work under pressure.
  • Ability to work independently and be highly self-motivated.
